Enteric diseases are infections commonly transmitted by means of food, but they can also be transmitted by means of water, from animals, and from other environmental sources. The Acute Infectious Disease Program collaborates closely with the Office of Food Protection and State Health Laboratory to detect new cases of foodborne illness and to control outbreaks of foodborne illness in Rhode Island.
