Developmental Screening

Child development is how each child learns new skills and activities as he or she grows. Developmental screening tells if a child is learning basic skills when he or she should. It can help parents, doctors, and child care providers understand how the child grows and learns (talks, moves, listens, makes friends) and check to see if the child's development is on track.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all young children get developmental screenings. When a developmental problem is recognized early, children can get the help they need sooner. If a problem is not recognized early on, it can be hard for a child to learn when he or she starts school. Services and programs for children with developmental problems help them grow, learn, and reach their full potential.

What We Do

We support the Watch Me Grow RI program in partnership with the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. This program provides training and technical assistance to healthcare and child care providers to help them:

• Provide developmental screening to children.
• Work with parents to access services for children if developmental problems are identified.
• Answer questions from parents about their children's development.

What You Should Do

Parents

Support your child's health and development:

• Provide a safe, loving home and participate in activities with your child like playing, singing, reading, and talking.
• Make sure your child eats smart, moves more, and gets enough rest.
• If you are worried about your child's development, talk with your child's doctor.
