Rhode Island licenses Home Nursing Care Providers (HNCP) and Home Care Providers (HCP). Home Nursing Care Providers provide skilled nursing services and can also provide more general home care services (i.e., assistance with daily living and care, housekeeping, companion, shopping). Home Care Providers do not provide "skilled" services, but can provide assistance with daily living and personal care. Businesses that only provide homemaker and companion assistance, meaning, no personal care for direct hands-on assistance with daily live care, do not require a license.
Home Nursing Care Providers can also be certified to meet the federal Medicare services, authorized under the federal CFR Title 18 regulations. HNCP's that are "certified for Medicare" are referred to as Home Health Agencies (HHA).
Skilled home health agencies, providing care such as nursing or therapy
Non-skilled home health agencies, providing services not covered by Medicare, such as help with dressing, bathing, shopping, and light cleaning
