In response to an influenza pandemic, Healthcare Service Regions (HSRs) have been created by the Department of Health and the state's ten acute-care hospitals to coordinate regional healthcare. The state's municipalities have been divided into these ten regions with roughly equal populations. The lead hospital coordinates healthcare services within the region.
The Department of Health has asked each of the ten acute-care hospitals to manage the healthcare resources in each region. Specifically, the lead hospitals of the Healthcare Service Regions have been asked to coordinate the ability to meet increased demand for medical services and the vaccination of healthcare workers and first responders in their respective regions. Every Healthcare Service Region hosted an H1N1 mass vaccination clinic for healthcare workers and first responders on January 9. (more vaccination opportunities)
